A Space Themed Bedroom: Young Boys Room Makeover

When we moved in to our new house last summer, younger boy was 6. Of all the upstairs rooms in the house, Younger boy’s bedroom was the one that I was itching to do the most. This is how we transformed it into a space themed boys room.

The room had obviously been a boy bedroom before, and was painted a very cold pale blue. The navy blue carpet sucked all the light out of the room, and the thick Navy curtains did the same. It also sported dado rails and a rather odd light fitting, that looked a bit like a gothic bird cage! As the room is north facing, the overall result of this decor was a bit severe and not very pleasing! The other problem with the room was the huge built in wardrobe – that protruded into the room and severely limited our layout options.

So the wardrobe had to go, along with the hideous dado rail running around the room. Sadly I forgot to take pictures of the demolition stage – suffice it to say that my husband took a sledgehammer to it one Sunday afternoon and the wardrobe was gone. We then got a plasterer to come and re-plaster the wall and skim the Artex ceiling.

Reach for the stars…

Younger boy was keen to have some input into the redecorating process and what his room would look like. He wasn’t quite as sure as his older brother (see his room revamp here) of what he wanted though. After putting together some ideas on Pinterest for him, these are the ideas that he picked out as liking the best for a space themed boys room:

He particularly liked the constellations wallpaper in the middle image. I therefore set about trying to find something similar. After looking at various options, he and I settled on a paper from B&Q which I put up on one wall. Unfortunately they stopped selling that particular wallpaper a while ago, so here is a similar one from World of Wallpaper. Don’t zoom in on the photos of this wall – my wallpapering skills are passable but shaky! To keep the room light and bright, I painted Farrow & Ball Ammonite on the rest of the walls.

We replaced the horrible carpet with Quickstep laminate flooring in Natural Varnished Oak, which I think really warms the room up and gives it all a lift.

Finishing Touches

Now the room was really starting to come together. Younger son decided he would like a blind rather than curtains, the same as his big brother. We went for a denim-blue roller blind from Blinds 2 Go:

I also found a brilliant lampshade that matched the wallpaper perfectly from Mobilampshades on Etsy:

I found this beautiful bedding in John Lewis – which Younger son loves (especially because of the matching teddy!):

Where we took the wardrobe away, Younger boy has much more room to play with his Lego and cars. He keeps his stuff in an Ikea Stuva unit, which has drawers for his clothes and a cupboard at the top for him to store his toys in. At the moment he doesn’t really need a wardrobe as all he has to hang are dressing up outfits. I bought a hanging rail from Amazon and have fixed this up between the Stuva unit and the wall. So far it seems to be doing the job:

Younger boy loves his new room – hopefully it will last him a few years before it needs a major re-vamp! For other boy bedroom ideas you can see my Older boy’s bedroom makeover here.
